HOW TO BECOME A ROOFER IN QUEBEC?

Roofers are responsible for installing, repairing and replacing flat and pitched roofs. Are you interested in this field? Whether you’re looking for your first job or considering a career change, René Perron Couvreurs would be happy to get to know you and maybe count you among our team of roofers in Montreal and Laval. Here’s how you can become a roofer in Quebec.

WHAT TRAINING IS AVAILABLE?

To work as a roofer, you must first obtain a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) in roof covering installation. The Quebec training code number is 5351 (pose de revêtements de toiture). The 630-hour program combines theoretical courses with practical training. Topics covered include the construction industry, health and safety on construction sites, material selection, reading and interpreting building plans and applying coatings for different types of roofing.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

Once you complete your training, you’ll begin your first job as an apprentice. At this stage, you have an apprentice competency certificate (ACC). Once you’ve completed a minimum of 2,000 hours of work and passed your qualification exams, you’ll receive your journeyman competency certificate (JCC).

Roofers work primarily outdoors, and work may be seasonal. You must be comfortable working on noisy, hot and dusty construction sites. Essential qualities of a good roofer include physical stamina, a good eye for detail and an ability to work with a team.

If you choose, you can join the Master Roofer Association of Quebec (l’Association des maîtres couvreurs du Québec). As a member, you’ll be given technical support for your projects. You can also participate in courses and activities to keep your skills up to date and help you stay abreast of the latest developments in the field.
